iLearn? Interview informed consent form

INTRODUCTION

Participants are invited to participate in a research study. The purpose of this study is to explore the transition in magazines from print media to digital editions for tablets like the iPad. Approximately 10 content creators and IT staff members at magazines will be interviewed about the magazines' platform priorities and stances on innovation, as well as the expertise and the types of training required to create digital editions.

INFORMATION ABOUT PARTICIPANTS’ INVOLVEMENT IN THE STUDY

Survey participants who indicated interest in participating in follow-up interivews will be contacted via email. Participants will provide additional information about survey questions on the print-to-digital shift in magazines. The interview will take approximately one hour of the participants' time.

RISKS

No foreseeable risks are perceived at this stage. The interviews will be recorded by explicit consent of the participants, and the recordings will not contain any identifiable information. The tapes will be kept for 3 years and then destroyed.

BENEFITS

This project will provide a thorough exploration of magazine content creators’ and IT staff members’ perceptions of the shift from print media to digital editions for tablets such as the iPad. This scholarly study will fill a research gap because this digital shift has not been studied as widely for magazines as it has been for newspapers. This project will strengthen magazine staff members’ understanding of digital editions for tablets, the skills needed to develop them successfully, and the challenges involved with changing technological platforms. This is the right time to perform this study because tablet editions of magazines have become standard, but staff members still struggle to make this shift and meet its competing demands. Finally, the study will provide a starting point for charting the larger shift in magazines from print media to websites to tablet editions to mobile editions.

CONFIDENTIALITY

The information in the study records will be kept confidential. Data will be stored securely and will be made available only to persons conducting the study unless participants specifically give permission in writing to do otherwise. No reference will be made in oral or written reports which could link participants to the study.

COMPENSATION

Participants will receive no compensation for their participation in this study. However, the anonymous results will be shared. The researchers look forward to sending the results to you.
